What is Hand Therapy?
A hand therapist is highly skilled in the assessment and treatment of finger, thumb, hand, wrist and elbow injuries. Custom made thermoplastic orthoses, also known as splints, are moulded from a low temperature plastic to the shape of your hand. They are fabricated during the consult and have the ability to be remoulded and altered as needed.
Hand Therapy addresses a wide range of injuries, including post-surgical recovery, traumatic injuries, as well as chronic conditions.
- Arthritis / Rheumatoid / Osteo / Base of thumb pain
- Wrist pain
- De Quervains
- Dupuytren’s
- Trigger finger
- Flexor or Extensor tendon injuries / repairs
- Sporting injuries
- Finger dislocations
- Mallet finger injuries
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Crush injuries
- Fractures (hand, wrist, fingers)
- Tennis or Golfer’s elbow (lateral / medial epicondylitis)
- Nerve compressions and repairs
- Resting / Positioning splints
Do I need a referral letter?
You do not need a referral to book a hand therapy appointment as a private client, although a referral is always appreciated to give background to your injury. A referral is only needed if the consult is covered by a third part such as Return to Work SA, motor-vehicle accident claims or Medicare EPC programs. We are able to access most radiology imaging online with your consent during your consultation.
